Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) - The
threats from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons didn't
disappear with the end of the Cold War. In some ways, these threats
have become more dangerous. The terrorists who planned and carried
out the attacks on September 11th showed a willingness to take
innocent lives, limited only by the capacity of the weapons
available to them. The world's security may depend on who moves
faster - those trying to get weapons material and know-how or those
trying to secure them. Ted Turner and Sam Nunn have joined
together to create the
Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a charitable organization
working to reduce the risk of use and prevent the spread of weapons
of mass destruction. NTI has brought together international experts
with different views and experience who share a common goal of
taking immediate action to close the gap between the global threat
and the response. NTI seeks to increase public awareness, serve as a
catalyst for new thinking and take direct action to reduce these
threats.
