- WHO Division of Emergency and Humanitarian Action - The World Health Organization's (WHO) Division of Emergency and Humanitarian Action (EHA) is responsible for coordinating the international response to emergencies and natural disasters in the health field, in close partnership with other member agencies of the United Nations Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC), and within the framework set out by the United Nations Department of Humanitarian Affairs (DHA). EHA was established in 1993 replacing, with a strengthened and more extensive mandate, the former Emergency Relief Operations Division (ERO), to handle health sector emergency and humanitarian activities.
- Coordination Center for Natural Disaster Prevention in Central America (CEPREDENAC) was established in 1988 as a coordination center for strengthening the capacity of the region as a whole to reduce the vulnerability of the population to the effects of these phenomena.

- The Sphere Project - the Sphere Project was launched by an established group of humanitarian agencies. This project sought to develop a set of standards in core areas of humanitarian assistance in order to better the quality of assistance provided to people affected by disasters, and to improve the accountability of agencies. The Project was undertaken out of concern that a massively increased demand for humanitarian relief worldwide was in danger of outstripping the response capacity of the humanitarian system and could lead to inconsistent quality of relief efforts.
